The math of car shopping has changed. The average new car last month sold for $48,334. With prices that high, luxury vehicles are now almost average.

The 2024 Acura MDX is the top of the Acura lineup — the flagship vehicle of Honda’s luxury division. Despite carrying almost every luxury and technology option one of the world’s best-known carmakers can build, it starts at $49,850 — barely more than the average buyer paid last month.

Its equivalent at Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan, is the QX60. It has similar charms and a similar price tag. Let’s see how these two compare. Note that this comparison uses the 2024 MDX and the 2023 QX60 because those are the models on dealership lots this month.

The 2024 Acura MDX offers seating for seven in luxurious surroundings, smooth power delivery from a choice of two V6 engines, and the option of Acura’s well-liked Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system for foul-weather grip. Prices start at $49,850.

Optional SH-AWD: Car critics love Acura’s SH-AWD system. On a wet road, it offers enhanced grip for safer travel. On a dry road, it vectors torque between the left and right rear wheels, pointing the car more aggressively into turns. It can make a 3-row SUV dance like a sports car.

Exceptional ELS audio system: Every luxury car has a great audio option, but we’re particular fans of the ELS audio system Acura builds into the MDX. It’s available with 12, 16, or 25 speakers and is truly exceptional with the full set.

Available Type S package: Acura calls its high-performance editions Type S models. The MDX Type S gets a 355-horsepower turbo V6, an adaptive air suspension, Brembo performance brakes, and the SH-AWD system to create something a lot of fun to drive.

The 2023 Infiniti QX60 is another strong entry in the hotly-contest 3-row luxury midsize SUV segment. It offers 295 horsepower, seating for 7, and the option of an ultra-luxurious Autograph edition. Prices start at $49,200.

Real leather in every trim level: Most luxury automakers (including Acura) now use imitation leather on base-model trims. Not Infiniti. Even the least-expensive QX60 boasts the real thing. If a luxury car means leather to you, you’ll appreciate the Infiniti’s natural hide more than the leatherette of the MDX.

Exceptional Autograph edition: Infiniti turns up the opulence with its available Autograph edition. It gets second-row captain’s chairs, giving rear-seat passengers more space, soft semi-aniline leather upholstery, and a black obsidian roof and black roof rails adding presence to the look.

Extra cargo space: The Infiniti’s body is sleek but not so sleek that it robs you of luggage space. The QX60 can accurately claim four cubic feet more for cargo.

Just $650 and five horsepower separate these two; similar fuel economy, identical warranties

You’d probably enjoy driving in either the 2024 Acura MDX or the 2023 Infiniti QX60. If you’re the type who loves to drive, Acura’s SH-AWD system and the option of a lusty Type S edition might make the MDX the right choice. If sedate, cocooned-from-the-road luxury is more your style, the Infiniti QX60 might be the better choice, with its available Autograph model. But either is likely to keep you happy on the road for years.
